Carolina F.

was in Dekalb, IL on 9/11/01.

I was an exchange student at NIU. I am originally from Brazil and I working at the department of foreign languages, as a student worker. I saw the plane hitting the first tower. It was surreal. As people around me started to cry, I started to cry too. It was a very lonely day. I did not know a lot of people and I had no one to give a hug. I remember walking around on campus, crying and feeling lonely. It was a very sad day. I was told by the international student services office not to congregate. I only knew few people anyway.

That day I felt sorry for myself. But here I am 25 years later! This country gave me a family ! We can never forget the lives lost. Make it count and make a difference in this life! And please whatever you do, love people. We are one and the same! I love America!

A generation of Americans has no memory of 9/11. Stories like Carolina's help them remember.

At the Gary Sinise Foundation, we're preserving the stories of those who experienced it so they can be shared with generations to come. We must never forget the pain we endured, the heroism we witnessed, or the togetherness we felt.
