When 9/11 happened, I was running NYC’s marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau, NYC & Company. After the attacks, it became clear our brave rescue workers weren't the only ones needing help. NYC’s economy did too, to let the world know NYC was resilient and open for business. The day after 9/11, Mayor Giuliani asked me, “How quickly can the Broadway theaters get back and running?“ We managed to convince some distraught actors to perform and the next night, I attended the Full Monty. At the end of the show, the entire theater broke out into a heartfelt rendition of "God Bless America." I learned later other theaters did the same. It was our job to put NYC’s strongest and best face forward to the rest of the country for the greater good, and that moment represented it.
