I was a full-time member of the Ohio Air National Guard and had command of the Operations support Flight. All of the offices had a TV that was tuned to a news stations. someone said an airplane hit the World Trade Center. Being from New York I remembered that a B-25 bomber hit the Empire State Building after WWII. That is the first thing I thought of. Bad weather, a lost airplane; history repeats itself. Then the second airplane hit and then the 3rd at the Pentagon. I turned to one of the people that worked for me and said we are at war. At that point training kicked in and we began running checklists and coordinating with other units on base. Phone calls came in asking if we could launch aircraft, we flew KC-135 refueling aircraft. We gave them our response. Our initial instructions were to takoff, go to this radio frequency, fly on a certain heading, go to a certain altitude and someone would talk to use. One of my friends flew a later mission, the Pentagon was still smoking as they looked down from the air refueling are they were in. We continued to fly 24/7 until March of 2002. Always remember.
