A Season of Support: Lifting Up Families of Fallen First Responders

This past week the Gary Sinise Foundation was honored to welcome over 1,000 children and surviving spouses/guardians of our nation’s Fallen First Responders to our Snowball Express annual event. Over several meaningful days, families found connection, comfort, and moments of joy during a season that can be especially difficult, all while honoring the heroes they carry with them every day.

A Journey Marked by Gratitude
The experience began at airports across the country, where our presenting sponsor American Airlines helped turn departures into celebrations of care and community. Families were greeted with festive décor, welcoming volunteers, crafts, and breakfast before boarding chartered flights bound for Orlando, Florida and Walt Disney World Resort.

Spaces for Connection and Understanding
Once settled, families explored the Snowball Express lounges - welcoming spaces designed for children, teens, and parents/guardians to relax, play, and connect with others who understand their journey. These moments of shared experience are essential, as no one understands the grief and resilience of these families quite like one another. The connections formed here often extend far beyond the event itself.

Honoring Service Through Tradition
One of the most meaningful experiences for families was the Patch Wall, created with the help of Americans from across the nation. First responder departments and individuals answered the call, sending hundreds of patches from firehouses, precincts, and personal collections nationwide.

In the first responder community, patches represent identity, service, and pride - and collecting or trading them is a long-standing tradition. Children proudly selected and exchanged patches, and, with support from the Patriot Guard Riders, created custom vests to display their collections. It was a powerful way to pass down a cherished tradition while honoring the legacy of their fallen heroes.

A Walk of Gratitude
A highlight of the week was the Walk of Gratitude at Magic Kingdom. Families made their way down Main Street, U.S.A., as Disney cast members lined the route, cheering them on in a moving display of appreciation.

Joining the families were members of the local sheriff department and fire department, who stood alongside them in support. The walk concluded at Cinderella’s Castle, where families sent messages of love and remembrance skyward for their fallen heroes in a moment filled with reflection, unity, and honor.

A Place for Reflection
Throughout the week, families visited the Remembrance Garden, a quiet space dedicated to honoring their loved ones. Each fallen hero was represented by an American flag, offering families a place to leave notes, reflect, and remember amidst the energy of the event. These moments of stillness served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the strength carried forward by these families.

Honor, Gratitude, & Rock n’ Roll
The week culminated with a high-energy evening at EPCOT featuring Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band. Families were welcomed with a red-carpet entrance, cheered on by Patriot Guard Riders and volunteers, and treated to a night filled with music, laughter, and celebration.

Special guest, Pittsburgh Patriot Paul Skenes joined the concert to show his support for the children and families, adding to an evening that blended joy, gratitude, and connection. From rock anthems to familiar Disney favorites, the concert brought everyone together in a shared moment of light and community.
